5 set mistakes to rival the Game Of Thrones Starbucks fiasco5 set mistakes to rival the Game Of Thrones Starbucks fiascoEven if youre not one of the 17 million people that tune into Game Of Thrones every week, you might have found yourself in a water cooler debate about the Starbucks coffee cup that appeared near Emile ClarkesDaenerys Targaryen on last Sundays episode. Was it just an earnest gaff? Or welches it an anachronistic exercise in product placement?HBO has since come out and confirmed it was the former in fact, both Starbucks and the mega TV networktook to the internet to deliver their own cheeseball lines. Starbuckstweeted TBH were surprised she didnt order a Dragon Drink, while HBO remarkedThe latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.HBOEven though HBO has already digitally wiped the latte fromWesteros forever, some still might not be satisfied with theiradmission. A common defense of the product placement angle is bolsteredby d isbelief that a network as big as HBO, producing a show as wide-reaching as Game of Thrones, could ever let something as glaring as a coffee cup slip through the cracks.Thing is, this breed of mistake actually happens on this scale quite often. The modern sabbatical looks different. But its still worth it
The modern sabbatical looks different. But its still worth itThe modern sabbatical looks different. But its still worth itFor the purposes of this article, I wanted to be clear (for myself and for you) on what a proper sabbatical looks like. What is a Sabbatical? The dictionary defines sabbatical asa period of paid leave granted to a university teacher or other worker for study or travel. Traditionally one year for every seven years worked.Once widely practiced in higher education, sabbaticals were seen as a time forcollege professorsto research, reflect, and culminate their lifes work. In recent years, more and more colleges havecited budget concernsas their reason for scaling back on offering this extended time of paid leave.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe concept of a sabbatical has been adopted by other industries, but executed in different ways. Most workplaces do leid of fer a year-long paid option. And today, most colleges and universities dont either.Todays sabbatical looks less like a proper sabbatical and more like a career break. While the former is more established, the latter is more fluid. Career breaks can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few years. More significantly, they are mostly unpaid. Is This All There Is?At some point, most of us will look up and ask the universe is this all there is?The first time I asked this question I welches 22 a far cry from the typical 40,at which research suggestsmost people will experience this question like a sudden storm raging through their lives.I had just transitioned from anintern on Capitol Hillto a full-time employee. For the first time in my life, I worked a full 40-hour week, and it left me absolutely exhausted. That was 10 years ago.Dont tell any of my overachieving,Insta-obsessedfriends, but I need a break.Since youre reading this, you might need one too. But as themillennial generationis set sq uarely ongrind-mode, it can be hard tobring this subject up at parties. We are perpetually working on a new project, accepting a new position, or traveling to a new destination. The goal of this article is bedrngnislage to take away from behauptung achievements. Achievements are good, and our goals are worthy. In fact, I hope to add more of them to the running list I keep on myiPhone. But as we get older, the energy we use to reach these goals can and will be depleted. Can a sabbatical prevent that from happening? I asked a number of professionals to share their experience. Here are their storiesPam Kocke, Happiness Engineer atWordPress.comI work at Automattic, the company behindWordPress.com. One of the perks of my job is that after five years, we get a three month paid sabbatical. Automattic is a 100% remote company, so everyone works from home. My sabbatical meant Id still be at home, but I just wouldnt log in to my computer to work. In fact, I barely touched my computer in three m onths, and I avoided my desk.Because its fully paid, it was a no brainer. I didnt have to worry about saving up for it, and we didnt take a hit financially. It also didnt affect my career negatively. I work on a small team and my teammates had taken their sabbaticals already, so I knew how they would handle my absence. When I came back to work afterwards, they gave me time to catch up and ease back into everything. I didnt have to worry about catching up on three months of unread emails they all went straight to the trash (important emails were routed to my colleagues). My goals for my sabbatical were to organize my house, volunteer in a NICU, and sew. A lot of people use their sabbatical to learn something new or to travel, but I really just wanted to have as much down time as possible. In the end, I did rock tiny babies in the hospital, and I did sew, but my house is still a disaster.I worried my three months would fly by. But I think because I didnt try to do too much, it felt li ke a wonderfully long break. I was ready to come back to work when it was over, excited to sit at my computer again and see my coworkers. Its been about two months since my sabbatical ended, and I am still feeling the positive effects of the time off.Kimberly Presnail,Active InternationalIn 2016, I took a sabbatical at the age of 34. After over 10 years of unexplained infertility, I made the decision to start IVF treatments. There is a significant financial and emotional investment in the process, and it was my last attempt at conceiving a child. Since my fertility was unexplained, everything was essentially a guessing game.So many people tell you when youre infertile to relax. But it can be extremely difficult when you have a demandingexecutive job, on top of the endless fertility appointments and procedures. I was so petrified to go through the intense process of IVF, and have it fail without any explanation as to why. Id then forever question whether or not stress on the job play ed a role. I couldnt control the stress of infertility, but I could control my job.At the time, our company did not have a sabbatical policy. I had been very open about my infertility story with my boss, who is the President of the company. When I ran the idea of a sabbatical by him to ensure I had left no stone unturned, he was very understanding and graciously granted me unpaid leave for 2 months. In my situation, the sabbatical was pre-planned and I had time to prepare financially (approximately $8,000). Otherwise, it would have been a lot more pressure. Pressure I couldnt afford as I was trying to reduce stress, not add to it. Plus, no doctor will write a note saying I need to be off work for IVF, sounemploymentinsurance was not an option.I would be lying if I said returning back to work form a sabbatical didnt feel awkward. There is a stigma attached to taking extended time off work. A fear of being perceived as lazy or unproductive. In the end the IVF I took the sabbatical fo r did not work.Five months after returning to work, I did a second round. That did work and I now have my daughter Quinn. I do not regret my decision to take a sabbatical nor my choice to be so open about my story. But I do think changing the stigma needs to start at the top. Our company now has an official sabbatical leave policy in place. And Im so happy to have played a role in that.Lauren Barbiero, Associate Director of Earned Media,W20 Groupbelastung year, I went on sabbatical at the age of 27. I work for healthcare-focused marketing communications firm and have been here since graduating college in 2013. One of the many benefits of W2O is that after five years of full-time employment, they allow you to take a five week paid sabbatical. However, the sabbatical must be taken in full succession (no splitting up weeks) and no checking email for the full five weeks. How easy is that? Sign me upI remember the shock on my parents faces when I told them my company was going to pay me to take five weeks off and travel the world.I traveled to Iceland, Switzerland, and France. Overall a sabbatical was the best thing I could have asked for. Apublic relations jobcan be grueling (as any client service job is). With late nights, early mornings, long hours, andlots of emails. Getting to take five weeks off to experience places Ive never been before andlet my mind unwindand helped me feel eager to come back to work. So, Should You Go On Sabbatical?A sabbatical is not for everyone. Some people simply cannotafford it. And for those of us who are strivers, a break maybring more stressthan relief. However, like I mentioned at the beginning of this article, energy depletion is real. If you want to work on a world-class level, protecting your energy is one of the best ways to get back to producing high-level work. What Are Some Alternatives to a Sabbatical? These days, a sabbatical can seem like a luxury to those of us chained to a desk or dutifully caring for a family. You may n ot be able to take off for a month, let alone an entire year. But most of us can take one day.The word sabbatical originates from the biblical termsabbath. Taking one day per week to fully rest can be just as effective, and certainly less disruptive, than a traditional sabbatical. How to Make the Most of Your SabbaticalBelieve it or not therearedown sides to taking a sabbatical. Some people complained of issues with theirspouse. Others could not handle beingalone with themselves. And still others felt as if they wasted the entire time, only to come back empty-handed.To combat these negative aspects, here are three pieces of adviceFirst, find community. You are not the first person to take a break and you certainly wont be the last. Find out where others have done and copy their success. Check out theFemale Solo Traveler NetworkandGo Wonder.Make a plan.Even if the plan is to lay in bed for a week. Or to visit your sister the next week. Capturing and Reusing Wasted Energy with Nanopeapods
Capturing and Reusing Wasted Energy with Nanopeapods Capturing and Reusing Wasted Energy with Nanopeapods Capturing and Reusing Wasted Energy with NanopeapodsWasted energy. Its a common lament for many people, especially engineers who focus on thermoelectric solutions. One solution is to transform excess energy to useful power, something a group of researchers is making strides in with a unique nanotube system.Kenneth Goodson is chair of the mechanical engineering department at Stanford University, whose team has a specialty in heat transfer and partly focuses on electronics cooling and energy harvesting, Theyve made recent advancements in developing carbon nanotubes, or nanopeapods, that someday could direct heat away from electrical components, such as computer chips, create thermoelectricity, and be reused for other applications.A key element of Goodsons latest round of research, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Tokyo and Nagoya University and outlined in a p aper published last year in Nature Materials, welches to create a way to collect and measure thermal data from the nanopeapods, which hasnt been done since they were discovered nearly 15 years ago.The community has been waiting a long time to learn about the impact on thermal transport because the measurements are so hard, Goodson says of the nanotubes, which are made from sheets of carbon atoms and rolled up into cylinders that are 500 times thinner than a human hair. For You Achieving Record Efficiency Highs on SolarNanotubes are made from sheets of carbon atoms and rolled up into cylinders. The nanotubes, Goodson explains, happen to carry heat very well. So well, in fact, that heat moves through them so quickly and efficiently that the conversion of thermoelectricity is completely bypassed. Thats a major problem when youre trying to collect energy. As a solution, Goodsons team, led by postdoc Takashi Kodama, stuffed the tubes with buckminsterfullerene or bucky balls, a form of carb on (C60) with a cage-like structure that resembles a soccer ball. Those provide resistance to the system, slowing the heat flow and increasing the thermoelectric effect, Goodson says.To capture the thermal details of the structures, the researchers had to find individual nanopeapods that were aligned in a mesh platform, allowing them to measure the heat moving through the structures. After the location with the appropriate sample is identified, Dr. Kodama was able to initialize that particular cell and proceed with the measurement, Goodson says.It was this insight and innovation on the experimental side of things that enabled the breakthrough measurement. The team now had a carbon nanotube structure that could lead to promising thermoelectric applications in the future. This is an exciting result that stimulated some interesting simulations, Goodson says. Three career lessons from Breaking Bad
Three career lessons from Breaking badeanstalt Three career lessons from Breaking BadPosted September 27, 2013, by Vivien Luu Notoriously addictive and guaranteed to give you severe withdrawal. Such is the effect of Heisenbergs signature Blue and Vince Gilligans powerhouse TV series Breaking Bad. For five diabolical seasons weve watched Walter White build his drug empire from the ground up and transform from Mr Chips to Scarface. From his tighty whitey-Winnebago cooking days when he still needed to rehearse lying to Skyler, Walt sure has come a long way. And hes fallen even further. But even as he descended deeper and deeper into the evil genius that is Heisenberg, I still found myself rooting for Walt. Why? Because at the end of the day, arent we all just trying to achieve what Walt set out to do? To provide for ur families, leave a legacy, and become our own bosses? Breaking Bad is a poetically shrewd metaphor for our modern-day working life. It may seem an unorthodox source of car eer advice, but beyond the gut-wrenching drama and stunning cinematography, the show has a lot to say about work and life and the melding of the two. As Breaking Bad so disastrously portrays, life doesnt always go to plan. You didnt plan the lung cancer, and you didnt plan to get knifed by your wife or ratted out by your business partner. Not every day can be an A1 day. So what do you do? Be flexible, be opportunistic and roll with the unpredictable. This Heisenberg method applies to your career too. Whether youve been made redundant, need to fold your business or realise you hate your dream job, a Heisenberg-like adaptability will put you in good stead because opportunities will come knocking. Its important to be open to them, and take advantage where you can. Nobody more eloquently underlines this point than Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. After finishing up with The X-Files and a two-year stint of unemployment, Gilligan was desperate for work. A fellow writer joked that th ey should hop into an RV and cook meth out in the desert. And the rest is history. From meek chemistry teacher to meth-cooking mastermind. From Walter White to Heisenberg. From Mr Chips to Scarface. Walts transformation couldnt more clearly showcase the fact that what we do for a living shapes who we are. How we spend those 40 to 60 hours a week what were doing, where, with whom and why seeps into our psyches and forms our sense of self. Whats more, it also determines how others will judge us. What do you do for a living? is, after all, one of the first questions asked when we meet new people. Your career is emblematic of who you are. The lesson here? Choose a career path that suits your personality. One that aligns with your moral code and worldview, and that will nurture your sense of self rather than destroy it. We neednt look any further than Jesses guilt-ridden night-time wanderings for an example of a man who did not abide by this career rule of thumb. I cant stress this o ne enough. When it comes to working with others you really need to DO. YOUR. HOMEWORK. Whether youre employing new staff or are being head-hunted by another company, its crucial to know who youre getting involved with. Make sure you get to know the person or company, what their work is like, and what their values are. Because at the end of the day, how well you work with them can make or break your career. If the chemistry is right, your work will thrive. Think Jesse and Walt the early years. Get it wrong and you could end up with a dead brother-in-law, only one of the eight barrelfuls of your fortune and revenge burning in your heart. Breaking Bad characters who failed to learn this career lesson and died for it include Gale Boetticher, that guy who was box-cuttered by Fring Gus Fring himself Mike Ehrmantraut (in Mikes defence, he knew Walt was a ticking time bomb and did try to get out) and the drug gang massacred on Lydias watch (albeit with her eyes and ears covered). Wow, tha ts a long list. Ignore this career tip at your own peril, people. End credits While this is a tongue-in-cheek take on one of the most morally ambiguous shows of our time, I think theres one thing we can all be crystal-meth clear on at the end of the day, none of us wants to look back on our lifes work only to think, It cant all have been for nothing.Bachelor of ScienceStudy modeOn CampusPayment optionsHECS-HELPUpfront paymentCourse guide+ FREE eBrochureEnquire verbunden Enquire OnlineScience ResourcesMolecular biologist sample resumeMolecular biologist sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesProfessor Ian Frazer - ScientistProfessor Ian Frazer - ScientistTahnee Claeys - Head of Operations at Mad PawsInterested in becoming a?Market ResearcherSafety InspectorLife ScientistEnvironmental ScientistHealth Promotion PractitionerPopular Career Searchesdiploma of business career pathcareer opportunities for master of commercegovernment funded mining courses brisbanehow to become a laborator y assistant in australiahow to become a research scientist in australiaScience CoursesGraduate Diploma of Data ScienceEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Health SciencesEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy)Enquire Online Enquire OnlineMaster of Occupational Hygiene and ToxicologyEnquire Online Enquire Online Vivien LuuViv is a writer who enjoys researching and writing about creativity, how the menschengerecht mind works, and neuro processes. Robotic Suits May Transform Manufacturing
Robotic Suits May Transform Manufacturing Robotic Suits May Transform Manufacturing Robotic Suits May Transform ManufacturingWearable powered or unpowered robotic suitsmetal frameworks fitted with motorized muscles to multiply the wearers strengthare set to dramatically change the manufacturing industry. In 2003, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, created Bleex, a robotic device that attaches to the lower body to complement the users strength. Fourteen years later, variations of these devices, which go by a number of names, including robotic exoskeleton and exosuit, are used primarily in health care rehabilitation. They allow wearers to operate, for example, a paralyzed limb, and help stroke victims move limbs as they regain strength and range of motion, says Dan Kara, robotics researcher at ABI Research, a technology market research company in New York.In 2014, the ReWalk system became the first personal robotic exoskeleton to be approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration. The battery-powered robotic suit, from ReWalk Robotics of Yokneam, Israel, attaches to the legs and lower back. It contains motors at the knee and ist der / die neue ) joints and sensors to help it adjust with each footfall. While wearing the device and holding two foreobere extremitt crutches, someone with complete lower-limb paralysis can walk. The full-body, wearable exoskeleton from Ekso Bionics is used to help paralyzed patients walk. Image Ekso BionicsBecause the suits are expensivethe ReWalk suits cost about $80,000their makers have looked to uses in other industries. Manufacturing, agriculture, and construction were obvious matches because the suits could be worn to enhance strength, Kara says.In manufacturing, the exosuits augment human motion to allow for more lifting strength and for improved production on repetitive tasks like squatting, bending, or walking, Kara says. Worker wearing the suits will also be less prone to severe injuries from accidents or ov erwork. Worker overexertion costs U.S. employers around $15 billion annually in compensation, he adds. When bending forward while wearing an exoskeleton from SuitX, compressed-air springs in the back of the suit take some of the lifting load off the wearer. A shoulder unit uses a similar assist-mechanism for lifting or working overhead, says Homayoon Kazerooni, chief executive officer at SuitX of Berkeley, CA, which makes exoskeleton systems for the legs, backs, and shoulders as well as a full-body version.ABI Research forecasts the robotic exoskeleton market will reach $1.8 billion in 2025, up from $68 million in 2014. This year, about 6,000 suits will be sold, mainly for rehabilitation. By 2025, ABI expects to landsee about 2.6 million on the market thanks to adoption by the manufacturing and construction industries.Still, the suits have yet to see widespread adoption within factories and plants. Thats slowly changing as implementations begin.Audi is using the Chairless Chair from Noonee to ease production workers strain. Image Audi.Since the end of 2016/beginning of 2017, the BMW Group Plant in Spartanburg, SC has deployed 66 Airframe Exoskeletons from Levitate Technologies, San Diego, CA, which provide shoulder support, and multiple Chairless Chair units from the Swiss company Noonee. The EksoWorks Vest is a shoulder and arm support exoskeleton with a headrest designed to alleviate the strain of continuously working with heavy tools above waist level. It uses no power, but provides ergonomic upper body and arm support that makes objects seem to weigh much less than they do and enables a worker to operate in a factory line posture without fatigue, according to Ekso Bionics. The Chairless Chair locks into place when a worker has to crouch or stand for prolonged periods. It reduces the pressure on the knee and the rest of the leg. Both the chairless chair and the should and arm support suits sell for about $5,000 each, far less than the suits mean to help those w ho are paralyzed walk.Eleven lower-body exoskeletons are already in use across several BMW Group plants in Germany. The exoskeleton consists of movable splints affixed to the legs or torso and locked in different positions. The leg support structure can transform prolonged standing into sitting to improve the comfort and flexibility of working conditions, says Christian Dunckern, Head of BMW Group production system, planning, toolmaking, and plant engineering. It will be possible to further reduce ergonomically unfavorable and strenuous tasks, giving workers an opportunity to apply their cognitive skills to the best effect, he says.German carmaker Audi is also using the Chairless Chain in production. We also anticipate new applications for colleagues with reduced physical capabilities, says Mathias Keil, head of industrial engineering methods at Audi AG.Parker Hannafin, Cyberdyne, Rex Bionics, and other companies currently make these suits, most of which were first created in tandem w ith military developers. For BMW Group, the exoskeletons complement other robotic and factory digitization efforts. They push robotics down to the operator level by allowing production-line workers to benefit from the robots strength, Dunckern says.BMW may bring in more exosuits in the future, after further evaluation, he adds.In the time of smart devices and digitalization, we must still keep an eye on the added value the applied technology offers to the company, Dunckern says. Nobody is better qualified to judge this than the people who actively shape our production system on a daily basis.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Nobody is better qualified to judge this value than the people who actively shape our production system on a daily basis.Christian Dunckern, Head of BMW Group

How to Modify and Maximize Your Resume Template
How to Modify and Maximize Your Resume Template How to Modify and Maximize Your Resume Template How to Modify and Maximize your Resume Template Should you use a resume template? If you follow career advice on the Internet, youâve probably read conflicting information about whether itâs acceptable to use a template, or if you should create your own. There are two sides to this debate: Yes, itâs ok to use a resume template because itâs efficient and hiring managers donât care, and No, itâs not ok because hiring managers will recognize the template and judge you as being lazy and unoriginal. Letâs get one thing out of the way first: argument number 1 is truer than number 2 - hereâs why. Hiring managers are not beauty pageant judges Hiring managers are paid to judge you as a candidate for a specific job role, not judge whether your template is unique or original. Donald Trump is the only person on earth who actually does both judge resumes and beauty pageants. The resume is merely a vessel for conveying information selling you as perfect for that job role. Provided that your resume template is clear and well organized, it is the information on the resume that is important, not whether itâs conveyed aesthetically in an original way. Only an incompetent hiring manager would reject a perfect candidate for a job role simply because the applicant used a Microsoft Word resume template. Now, while argument number 1 is truer, argument number 2 also has some merit that must be acknowledged - and this part is especially relevant for college students. Where the resume template needs work While downloading a resume template is perfectly acceptable, there are template modifications you can make that will maximize the impact of your resume and help you land more interview. Example: College Students A lack of work experience can make resume writing very difficult. The average college student is lacking in real job experience. Many have none whatsoever, and others may have had some internship roles or summer gigs. The problem? In general, resume templates are designed for professionals who already have solid work experiences. Hereâs the crux of the issue: because of the lack of work experience, a downloaded resume template may not be the best vessel to convey information for college students. College students may need to modify the template in order to package their experiences in a way that emphasizes their professionalism in an academic setting. So hereâs what it comes down to for college students: Yes, by all means, download a resume template. Itâs efficient and they look good. And yes, by all means, modify the template to better convey your experiences as a college student. If the template is the aesthetic shell of a car, the modifications youâll make are to the engine. But what modifications should college students make? Put the âEducationâ section first If the resume template youâve downloaded starts with a âProfessional Profileâ âQualifications Summaryâ or some other introductory section, consider eliminating it and moving the âEducationâ section to the top. For more info, you can read our article on how to start a resume. As a college student, your academic credentials are the most important part of your resume. Given that you have little to no professional experience to speak of, giving yourself a âProfessional Profileâ would be a stretch. Create a âMajor Achievementsâ section What major achievements from college can you put on your resume? College students with little to no work experience are often at a loss for how to fill up an entire page for a resume. One way is to create a âMajor Achievementsâ section that serves the same functional purpose as the âWork Experienceâ section on a professionalâs resume. In this section, you can add bullet points about your academic and life achievements, provided they are relevant to the job you are applying for. Example 1: If you were a part of your campus newspaper or magazine, you would treat it like a real job. Include the name of the publication, the dates you worked on it, your position, and write bullet points indicating your biggest achievements and contributions. Example 2: If you were in student government, include your position, the dates you served, and write bullet points indicating your biggest achievements and contributions. This strategy can be applied to any club or organization you participated in during college. Note: If you also had work experience, you can include both sections, with an emphasis on whichever experiences are most relevant to the job you are applying for. Conclusion With some slight modifications, downloading a resume template is a perfectly acceptable way for busy college students to save time. Again, a good resume template is one that conveys information clearly â" a function of font size, font style, use of white space, use of bolding, italics, and underlines, and margins. Save yourself a headache, download a resume template, and make necessary cosmetic changes to give yourself a boost over your competition. We also highly recommend using our acclaimed resume builder, which will automatically format your job descriptions onto our famous templates, and allow you to make easy modifications.

4 things millionaires have in common, backed by research
4 things millionaires have in common, backed by research 4 things millionaires have in common, backed by research What do millionaires do differently? Are they harder workers? Do they have brains that can bend spoons? Do they exhibit Bond Villain levels of cunning?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! For their books The Millionaire Next Door and The Millionaire Mind the authors surveyed over 700 millionaires to find out.80% were self-made, accruing all their wealth in one generation. And they were doing a number of things you and I probably arenât.Here are a few patterns the researchers saw:1) Most millionaires are self-employedGot a great idea for a business? Make sure the profits are going in your pocket, not your bossâs.Via The Millionaire Next Door:Twenty percent of the affluent households in America are headed by retirees. Of the remaining 80 percent, more than two-thirds are headed by self-employed owners of businesses. In America, fewer than one in five households, or about 18 percent, is headed by a self-employed business owner or professional. But these self-employed people are four times more likely to be millionaires than those who work for others.Sound risky? It is. Less than a third of new companies survive 10 years.Via The Illusions of Entrepreneurship:â¦no matter how you measure new firms, and no matter which developed country you look at, it appears that only half of new firms started remain in business for five years, and less than one-third last ten years. But millionaires have a different perspective. They think itâs risky to work for someone else. You could get laid off. Your boss could make a bad decision. They want to be in control of their own destiny and yes - theyâre quite confident. And research shows confidence boosts your income. But not only is entrepreneurship risky, itâs also hard work.In only two countries out of all the ones surveyed did the self-employed not work harder than salaried employees: Why do something so risky and difficult? Research shows one of the main things that makes us love our work is autonomy. And this is definitely true here. Youâd need to earn 2.5 times as much money to be as happy as someone who is self-employed.Via The Illusions of Entrepreneurship:These studies have found that people are more satisfied with their jobs when they are working for themselves than when they are working for others. In fact, the studies show that to be as satisfied when he is working for others as he is when he is working for himself, the average person needs to earn two-and-a-half times as much money!(For more on what the most successful people have in common, click here.)So these arenât salaried employees. But how do they decide what kind of companies to start?2) Millionaires choose their careers strategicallyThey donât start a business theyâre necessarily passionate about. They donât even do something they necessarily understand or have experience in.They start a business that they think is going to make money. They look for areas of big demand and small supply. Some of you are saying, âDuh. Of course thatâs how you should pick a business.â Yeah, but thatâs notwhat the vast majority of people do.Via The Illusions of Entrepreneurship:â¦there is no evidence that entrepreneurs select industries in which profits, profit margins, or revenues are higher.Sixty-three percent of new business owners admit their venture doesnât have a competitive advantage. Only a third say they really did a search for good business ideas. And the industry you start a business in is very important: some industries are over 600 times more likely to be successful than others.Via The Illusions of Entrepreneurship:â¦between 1982 and 2002, start-ups in the software industry were 608 times more likely than start-ups in the restaurant industry to become one of the 500 fastest growing private companies in the United States- 608 times more likely! One of the authors of The Millionaire Mind is a business school professor. Every year he asks his students what the most profitable businesses are.And every year the students canât even name one correct answer. If smart, educated business students donât know, why would the average person? But millionaires pride themselves on thinking differently and looking for underserved markets and hidden opportunities. And, frankly, the companies they start usually arenât sexy. They fall into the category of âdull-normal.â But they make bank.Via The Millionaire Next Door:Many of the types of businesses we are in could be classified as dull-normal. We are welding contractors, auctioneers, rice farmers, owners of mobile-home parks, pest controllers, coin and stamp dealers, and paving contractors.Despite thinking differently and doing things their own way, theyâre not jerks. 94% of millionaires said âgetting along with peopleâ was key.(For more on how not following your passion can be the smartest career strategy, click here.)So they run their own shop and choose wisely what type of business to be in. But to make it a success donât they have to be brilliant? Nope.3) Theyâre not geniuses but they have a strong work ethicWeâve all heard the old saying, âIf youâre so smart, why arenât you rich?â What was the average college GPA of an American millionaire?2.9 out of 4.0.(Not a lot of Phi Beta Kappa keys jangling around here, folks.)Few were ever called intellectually gifted and many were explicitly told they didnât have what it takes for medical school, law school or MBA school. But what most people donât know is that GPA is a very poor predictor of success.Via The Millionaire Mind:I find no substantial statistical correlation between the economic-productivity factors (net worth and income) and SATs, class rank in college, and grade performance in collegeâ¦And this may be part of the reason theyâre so successful as entrepreneurs: âsmarterâ people are less likely to take such risks.Via The Millionaire Mind:Overall, there is an inverse relationship between taking financial risk and various measures of analytical intelligence such as SAT scores. And maybe this is why former drug dealers are more likely to start businesses.Via The Illusions of Entrepreneurship:â¦people who dealt drugs as teenagers are between 11 and 21 percent more likely than other people to start their own businesses in adulthood. And their higher rate of self-employment isnât the result of wealth accumulated dealing drugs, greater likelihood of having a criminal record, or lower wages. In entrepreneurship, youâre the boss. So it requires leadership. And some research shows being super-smart actually makes you worse at being a leader.Via Mind in Context: Interactionist Perspectives on Human Intelligence:Cognitive ability tests have been notoriously poor predictors of leadership performanceâ¦. Leader intelligence under certain conditions c orrelates negatively with performance.(Though research shows if you want to be a successful terrorist, definitely study hard in school.)But future millionaires do work hard. When asked what their teachers did compliment them on, what was the most common response? Most dependable. When asked what they did learn in college, 94% replied âa strong work ethic.â And research shows self-discipline trumps IQ when it comes to success.(To see the type of schedule successful people follow every day, click here.)So we know how they bring their money in. Is there another part to the equation? Yeah. Donât let that money out.4) Theyâre cheapWhen the authors of The Millionaire Mind interviewed the wealthy, they didnât want them to feel uncomfortable. So they rented a penthouse in Manhattan, loaded it with four types of pâté, three kinds of caviar and plenty of fine wine. The millionaires arrived⦠and felt completely out of place. All they ate were the gourmet crackers. When off ered the fancy wine one interviewee said he only drank two types of beer: free and Budweiser. The researchers were stunned. They quickly realized the media images we see of millionaires arenât representative.Expect a millionaire to be a fancy dresser? 50% have never paid over $399 for a suit. (10% had never paid $195.)In fact, if you do see someone wearing a $1000 suit, itâs more likely theyâre not a millionaire.Via The Millionaire Next Door:For every millionaire who owns a $1,000 suit, there are at least six owners who have annual incomes in the $50,000 to $200,000 range but who are not millionaires.Fancy car? More than half have never paid over $30,000 for a car. See someone in a Mercedes? They are probably not a millionaire.Via The Millionaire Next Door:â¦approximately 70,000 Mercedes were sold in this country last year. This translates into about one-half of 1 percent of the more than fourteen million motor vehicles sold. At the same time, there were nearly 3.5 million millionaire households. What does this tell us? It suggests that the members of most wealthy households donât drive luxury imports. The fact is that two out of three purchasers or leasers of foreign luxury motor vehicles in this country are not millionaires. Most millionaires live a lot more like you and me than Jay Z or Elon Musk.Theyâre thrifty, not very materialistic, and they think a great deal about how much they spend.Via The Millionaire Next Door:There is an inverse relationship between the time spent purchasing luxury items such as cars and clothes and the time spent planning oneâs financial future. And the more materialistic people are, the less satisfied they are with their lives.Via 100 Simple Secrets of the Best Half of Life:Among participants in one study, those whose values were the most materialistic rated their lives as the least satisfying. â" Ryan and Dziurawiec 2001Research shows people are better with their money when they think long term. Exper ts say you should have a system. Are you as money-conscious as a millionaire? Most millionaires answer âyesâ to these four questions. Can you?Via The Millionaire Next Door: Does your household operate on an annual budget? Do you know how much your family spends each year on food, clothing and shelter? Do you have a clearly defined set of daily, weekly, monthly, annual and lifetime goals? Do you spend a lot of time planning your financial future? (For more on research-backed ways to spend your money so it increases your happiness, click here.)So itâs clear how millionaires make their money. But what should we take away from all of this?Sum upBeing a millionaire must be nice. But we wonât all get there. And thatâs okay. Money isnât everything. So even if you donât get rich, what lessons can we all learn from millionaires? Take control of your life as best you can. Plan and be strategic, whatever your career might be. Deciding Between Consulting Positions
Deciding Between Consulting Positions Deciding Between Consulting Positions How do I work best?First, figure out which firm is best tailored your individual working style. Certain firms (among them McKinsey and Booz Allen decide whether you would rather gain experience in many different types of projects, or become more expert in a small number.Client contact?Another consideration is the amount of client contact each firm affords its consultants. Spending a good deal of time at the client site, you will inevitably have some measure of contact. But this can mean anything from the occasional update meeting to everyday side-by-side interaction. Some consultants have no desire whatsoever to consort with employees from the client company. They find themselves getting bogged down by having to explain everything they are doing (and why they are charging so much for it). Others enjoy working in teams with the client. Not only can it be an opportunity to hone your management skills, but it also can better acquaint you with the industry, the company, and its p eople. This is especially beneficial if you are contemplating a future career change.~On the road - again?Extensive travel is synonymous with the consulting industry. Chances are that if you are already set on becoming a consultant, you are prepared to be on the road for at least part of the time. But unless you are a direct descendant of Magellan or Jack Kerouac, you'll probably want to try to limit your travel time. To compare firms in this regard, look at the number of worldwide offices each has. For example, firms like BCG, Bain, McKinsey, and Andersen Consulting have locations all over the globe, and so are better equipped to staff their projects with consultants based in nearby areas. At the opposite end of the spectrum are Gemini and Monitor, which are focused in fewer places and thus are more likely to send their consultants to remote client sites. Look at the firm's staffing policy as well. Now that firms are developing particular specialties, many consulting firms will staff worldwide, sending their best experts in particular fields, rather than drawing from local offices. All over the map? Finally, and perhaps most relevant to your long-term plans, you must get a sense of how quickly consultants at each firm begin to specialize. This is similar to choosing on how many different types of projects you wish to work. Are you more interested in gaining depth or breadth of experience? Keep in mind that almost every consulting firm funnels its employees toward one industry eventually if they stay long enough. But at some firms (e.g., Booz?Allen), new consultants must choose an industry in which to concentrate as soon as they start work. This may work for you if y

Who Are You
Who Are You Who Are You Who Are You? If I told you that I heard of someone who runs about 5 miles a day, you probably wouldnât be super impressed. But if I told you that this person ran 58,282 miles over the last 31 years, a mile for each of the fallen Vietnam veterans, you would likely look up from your cup of joe and pay attention. Duties are what you do every day (for example, run 5 miles). Accomplishments, on the other hand, tell people how extraordinary you are, and why they should hire you. For example, all administrative specialist resumes will list experience with word processing, scheduling meetings, handling time-keeping, coordinating correspondence and answering phones. How then, will the HR person know which applicant to pick? The answer is accomplishments. Duties are absolutely necessary in your resume, but accomplishments will make you stand out. They show your unique capabilities, your drive and determination, your career passions, your ability to get things done, and your reasons for being the best candidate. Here are some examples to show you the difference between duties and accomplishments. Notice how anyone in same position would claim the same duties, but the accomplishments make the individual remarkable and recognizable. Agricultural leader and pioneer in improving many aspects of farming with his advancements in crop rotations, fertilizers, and farm equipment. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Create annual operating plans to support strategic direction set by the board and correlate with annual operating budgets. 7 Life Lessons You Shouldnt Wait Your Whole Life to Learn
7 Life Lessons You Shouldnt Wait Your Whole Life to Learn 7 Life Lessons You Shouldnt Wait Your Whole Life to Learn Life lessons are full of wisdom because they often have to be learned the hard way. However, the worst part about that process is realizing that sometimes, not every opportunity lasts forever. You finally âget itâ long after the fact. If possible, itâs best to learn these seven things sooner rather than later: 1. If You Want to âDo What You Love,â You Have to Work Three Times as Hard as Everyone Else Most people donât get to spend their lives doing whatever it is they love. Instead, they do what they are told they should do, or what their parents, town, friends, or peers suggest that they do. Or, they simply pursue nothing close to their heart at all. But if you want to do what youâre passionate about, you need to see that as a privilege, not an expectation. Those people are not the majority. So if thatâs what you truly want, you have to put in the work now. 2. Beneath Anger Is Always Fear As the wise Yoda says, âFear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.â Whenever we suffer, especially for long periods of time, at first we believe itâs because of something outside of us- something we hate. And if we make it past that emotion, we find below that hate is a rumble of anger, and certainly something we have held on to for far too long. But beneath all of that is always fear. A fear of loss. A fear of vulnerability. A fear of letting go. But if you can get to the point of acknowledging the fear, you will see its lighthearted shadow- compassion. And you will be able to move forward. 3. Our Everyday Habits Form Our Future Selves What you do today is one more action toward who you will be tomorrow. When that action is replicated over the course of a week, you begin to scratch the surface of change. When that action is replicated over the course of a month, you begin to notice a slight difference. When that action is replicated over the course of a year, two years, five years, you may no longer recognize yourself- you will have changed, in that particular way, completely. Donât underestimate the power of each and every small habit done over time. For good or bad, your habits determine who you will ultimately become. 4. Your Emotions Take Practice When we think about practice, we often talk in terms of skill. You practice the piano, or you practice playing hockey. But the thing is, who you are emotionally also takes practice. You can practice humility, or forgiveness. You can practice self-awareness and humor, just as easily as anger, resentment, drama, and conflict. Who you are, emotionally, is a reflection of the things you consciously (or unconsciously) work on. You werenât âbornâ upset. You have merely practiced that emotion far more than you have, say, joy. 5. Everyone Has His or Her Own Agenda This is quite a cliché phrase, and is often said in a negative context. But Iâm using it differently: Itâs worth acknowledging that, at the end of the day, we all must provide for ourselves. We all have our own dreams, goals, aspirations, families, close friends, and significant others, and we all want the same fundamental things. There are those you can trust, of course, but the best way to keep yourself rooted and at ease is to know that each and every person has his or her own agenda. You canât control others. You canât expect them to put you before themselves. And trying to do so may work for a period of time, but eventually, the truth will rise to the surface. Instead, make it a point to address and help others move toward their own dreams, as you request their help in moving toward yours. The relationship will more smoothly move in the right direction this way. 6. Achievement Will Never Be as Fulfilling as the Journey Itâs one thing to set a goal and enlist the help of others to see its achievement through. Itâs entirely another thing to sacrifice your own wellbeing, and the wellbeing of those around you, for that goal and achievement. The high at the end is never worth the emotional strain that takes place to get there. If youâre not able to enjoy the journey with those around you, then the end goal will become meaningless. 7. Working Hard and Laughter Are Not Mutually Exclusive Building on the previous point, I never understood why people feel that laughing means not taking the matter at hand seriously. The best ideas come through ease. The best flow happens in moments of joy. The human connection begins with laughter, and to laugh while working or solving a problem is to be open to new possibilities. Some people never learn this- they become grumpy and old. But life is about having fun. And to have fun doesnât mean, by default, that youâre not âgetting anything done.â On the contrary, you can have fun and get more done than you ever thought imaginable. 6 Unmistakable Signs Its Time For a Promotion
6 Unmistakable Signs It's Time For a Promotion 6 Unmistakable Signs It's Time For a Promotion As an employee, there is no one who can champion your career and advocate for your growth quite like you . And while you might know what your next step should be, figuring out when to approach the topic can be tricky. Talk to your boss outside of the review cycle, and his or her hands are tied until next quarter. Watch and wait, and your manager overlooks you yet again. However, there are some clear signs that point towards a promotion. These 6 indicators are all you need to confidently walk into your bossâ office and say, âLetâs talk about my future here at the company.â Youâve been #winning in all areas of your job. Making the case for a promotion is far easier when youâve not only met, but exceeded expectations. Youâve knocked presentation after presentation out of the park. That deal wouldnât have gone through without your tireless work. A patient just sent you a thank you note and flowers. The CEO just gave your team a shout out in the all-employee meeting. If your track record reads a little something like this, youâre due for a step up. Extra work has been coming your way. Part of being awesome at work is becoming the bossâ go-to person for extra work. Donât consider yourself a dumping ground, consider yourself a utility player. Keep track of all the assignments that are not in your job description or that you are picking up for others. Come review time , these are great bullet points to add to the conversation and bolster your argument that not only are you ready for a promotion, youâve been doing the work of a more senior team member. You and your boss have been talking about your long-term career goals. Has your boss recently asked you something like, âWhere do you see yourself in 2 to 3 years?â Or, â What are your plans long-term?â If so, they are trying to gauge what excites you about work. If your boss values you, they want to know how they can help you develop and keep you engaged at the company. This is a perfect opening to have a conversation about your trajectory and possibilities for promotion. Thanks to Glassdoorâs Know Your Worth tool , you just found out that your peers with the same education, location and experience are being paid more than you. Plus, there are senior manager roles open at your company with job descriptions that read much like your resume does. Print out your personal salary estimate from Know Your Worth and have the promotion conversation ASAP. At a loss for what to say, hereâs a handy script plus some potholes to avoid during the crucial conversation. Youâve been asked to lead new projects. Remember playing âFollow the Leaderâ in elementary school? These days, youâre not playing for fun, youâre playing to win. If you have been leading new projects and initiatives - a supplier diversity program or a mentoring group - chances are the boss has taken notice. Exhibiting leadership skills successfully and consistently is a surefire sign youâre more than ready to climb the corporate ladder. Colleagues, clients, and customers often mistake you for a manager. Whether itâs because you carry yourself with confidence and polish or because youâve been the lead on the last three successful campaigns, everyone thinks you box above your weight. Given that you #ActLikeABoss, itâs time your title and pay reflect that. Itâs time to get paid (and promoted) fairly.

The Grandfather of Google Glass
The Grandfather of Google Glass The Grandfather of Google Glass Alex Pentland, often called the grandfather of Google Glass, and cited by Forbes in 2012 as one of the seven most powerful data scientists in the world, wears so many hats it boggles the mind. Pentland directs both the Human Dynamics Laboratory and the Media Lab Entrepreneurship program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The lab pioneered the idea of society enabled by Big Data and has developed reality mining, which uses mobile phone data to extract patterns to predict human behavior. He also is a driving mind behind organizational engineering, biometrics, and wearable computing. How has your work and educational background, along with your interests, led to your present roles? Ive always been interested in human-machine systems, ranging from cars with assisted driving to distributed organizations to governments and society generally. I was also lucky enough to get a solid mathematical, signal processing, and machine learning background early on. As an undergraduate at the University of Michigan I was put in charge of a NASA project building systems for space satellite remote sensing of the environment. My first job was counting Canadian beavers from space. Whats been your most challenging project to date? The current problem of how our society promotes greater sharing of ideas and information while at the same time protecting personal privacy and security. This is the focus of the discussion group I co-led at Davos for the World Economic Forum in 2011 and it constitutes much of my research here at MIT and research elsewhere in the world. Our current best solution is to give individuals greater control over information that is about them through the mechanism of personal data stores (PDS). Our openPDS solution is what MIT and the European Institute of Technology are currently experimenting with to address the thorny sharing versus privacy problem. Do you wear Google Glass? Im often called the grandfather of Google Glass so I sort of have to, dont I? To not wear Glass would be letting down both the wearables community and my former students. Can you talk about a few projects at the Human Dynamics Lab youre involved with? What, for instance, is reality mining? What is the idea of a society enabled by Big Data? We have entered an age where our current systemspower, transportation, governance, healthare all failing because theyre built on static designs of the 1800s. At the same time we suddenly have digital data about almost everything; breadcrumbs thrown off by cell phones, credit cards, car transponders, and such. We use reality mining to analyze that data and build dynamic, predictive systems that are far more efficient and robust than current systems. Such dynamic systems can address the grand challenges facing our society. But to achieve that promise we must also solve the problems of privacy and government surveillance. Of what in your life are you most proud, workwise? I have always been able to rise above the ongoing research dialogue and ask, Why are we focusing on particular questions? and then offer more fundamental and productive questions for the community to pursue. This has let me change the direction of several research communities: imaging, wearable computing, transportation, technology for development, multimedia, health sensing, and social networks, among others. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Hari Seldon, a fictional character who built mathematical models of societys evolution. In Isaac Asimovs Foundation trilogy, Hari was able to guide the human race to salvation by use of small, exactly timed nudges. Anything else you want to add? My new book, Social Physics (Penguin Press), came out in February 2014, and I think it is the nearest thing yet to a mathematical, practical theory of human society. Anyone with a technical bent who is interested in human-machine systems, privacy, or building better organizations will probably really enjoy it. View the current and past issues of Mechanical Engineering. For Further Discussion I'm often called the grandfather of Google Glass so I sort of have to [wear them], don't I? To not wear Glass would be letting down both the wearables community and my former students.Alex Pentland, MIT
